Unable to set default printer is a vexing error, it compromises your printing tasks whenever the system prompts you to have your printing device to be set as default before you can proceed to print.  This error is related to the printer you have set as default before and there are several methods on fixing this problem. Most of the time, the system's troubleshooting feature cannot mend this error automatically, and updating the printer's driver software does not usually come in handy. Of all the known fixing procedures on this specific error, editing the Windows Registry is the most effective way.

Printer names that was recorded on the registry are priority on the system which sometime cannot be changed automatically if you're trying to set a new default printer. Therefore, you have to manually modify the registry data. Note that the registry section is very sensitive,  serious  problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly, hence, it is imperative to follow the following steps on this tutorial carefully.

Important Tip: Back up your registry before you make some changes on it so you can restore the registry if an issue occurs. Follow this link to learn how to back up and restore the registry in Windows.

Now, here's how to troubleshoot Error 0×00000709:

  4. Now, on the the right column, double-click on Device String and edit the Value Data according to the exact Printer Name you want to set as default (e.g. EPSON L6160 Series,winspool,Ne03:). Hit OK to save. You may have a different "Ne" Number before the printer name, just leave it as is.

Once done, restart your PC to take full effect.
