Low Poly art emerge during the early stages of 3D graphics animation, it is a polygon mesh in 3D graphics that consist of several polygons to represent an object or character. Low Poly meshes are commonly used on mocking up 3D scenes which significantly reduces rendering times on video games and animated 3D movies. Only around late 2013 when low poly art gushed as a graphic style in 2D design and quickly became a graphic trend. Since then, low poly's has been all over the place, a magical graphic style that combines polygons with edgy colors that demonstrates a figure in an aesthetically abstract presentation.

There are different kinds of methods that creative people come up with in generating this kind of artwork. Usually, it is created on powerful graphics editors such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, Gimp and other image processing software. Some people manually tracing every detail of the source image by hand, and some use computer programs that detect colors and other details of the image to create vertices and automatically generate a low poly artwork.

Technically, you don't have to be a graphic artist to produce a low poly art, there are several tools available that can help you easily create your artwork in a few clicks and most of these tools are FREE to use.

Are you ready to create a low poly artwork? Check this out!

1. TriangulateImage 7

Developed by ConceptFarm, this image triangulator tool gives you the ability to triangulate any image by plotting points. The clarity level of your image will depend on the amount of the plotted points.

TriangulateImage 7 Main Interface Screenshot

This tool's controlP5 library-based interface is pretty straight-forward, you will be prompted 2 windows when you open the application, one is the main window which gives you the controls in creating the artwork, and the other one is the editor window where you process the plotting which also shows the labeled controls upon opening. The app will allow you to save your plotted points as a text file where you can also reload and the final output is saved as a PDF file. You can further edit the pdf in Adobe Illustrator where the original image is placed as a bottom layer.

Here are some sample triangulated images using this tool:

This tool is FREE to use, and available on Beta versions, you can download it HERE.

Note: 64bit users might get some problems in exporting the triangulated image, you can actually use the 32bit version which works fine as per users comments. The 64bit bug seems to be unfixed since the last update of this app last 2016.

2. Triangulator

Developed by Software Engineer Javier Borquez, this tool a very simple and easy-to-use Low Poly image generator which specifically uses the Delaunay triangulation (also known as a Delone triangulation). It has 3 algorithms for its triangulation process, the Yape06 (comes with Laplacian and Mineigen controls), Yape (with radius control), and Fast Corners (with threshold control).

The algorithms Yape06 and Fast Corners gives you better result with its sophisticated controls that produces more details from your base-image while the algorithm Yape produces a less detail low poly images. Using this tool is as easy as 1-2-3, you just have to upload your base image, select the algorithm you want to apply and slide its controls with your desired result on your preview.

You can set the image size to 720p, 1080p, 2160p or use the original base image size. The result image will be downloaded as PNG file, unlike other triangulator tools that gives you SVG files that is editable directly on vector processor applications such as Adobe Illustrator.

This online tool is totally FREE and can be accessed on this following sites:

3. IΔ

Simple web-based tool that lets you convert bitmap images to the beautiful artworks...

Created by a creative director Igor Borisenko, I♥Δ is a very simple and powerful low poly image generator tool that also generates mesh using Delaunay triangulation and the average color of the triangles coverage area. It allows you to import a bitmap image where you can manually plot points on canvass for the triangulation process or automatically randomized triangles based upon the image.

The tool creates a layer over the top of your base image. You can refine the details of your triangulated image by changing its opacity while manually plotting the points. You can save the low poly image as SVG (Scalable Vector Graphics) file to your computer which is directly editable using adobe illustrator or any vector processing software.

Here are some low poly image outputs using this tool:

It's totally FREE very easy to use and fast. Check this link for demo/tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Q514klc27w

Tool Update: Downloadable source files are not currently available on somestuff.ru/I, however, its hosted API can be accessed through this site http://www.breatharian.eu/triangulator/#

Part of the Lincoln Experiments project by Georg Fischer, a programmer, and a  multimedia designer, Image Triangulation Experiment is a sophisticated web application tool that allows you to easily create low poly images based on Delaunay triangulation algorithm, yielding interesting results.

Just like other triangulation tools, this one is also intuitive. You simply drop an image into the browser and process it, once you place your base image on the canvass, you can control the number of points, stroke width, blur, and accuracy. You can view the wire frame of the artwork by disabling the "Fill Polygons" option, and preview the output by enabling it.  You can also choose to fill gradients on each triangle of the artwork or use its default color fill.

This tool also has a randomize button that allows you to randomizes the four main controls. Finally, you can download the output file in PNG and SVG format. You can also share it on Facebook, Twitter, and Reddit.

Image Triangulation Experiment is 100% FREE and can be accessed HERE.

5. DMesh

By far, DMesh is the most well-known Image Triangulator Tool on the market today. Designed by Creative Technologist, Dofl Y.H. Yun, this powerful tool turns your images into beautiful techy artwork. While it is undoubtedly the most advanced low poly image generator, it is actually designed with newbies in mind. It works by analyzing and generating a triangulation pattern from your base image.

DMesh is a feature-rich tool that allows you to create low poly artworks in the simplest and most powerful way. You can easily turn pre-existing images into low poly artwork by simply overlaying the desired 3D triangle mesh over a 2D picture. You can also use Auto Point Generation feature which is useful for people doing animations or larger batches of images or for more refined output you can do the Manual Point Editing where you can control the number of mesh points dynamically for a realistic result, or subtract to make the image more abstract. You can export your finished files in bitmap, Wavefront OBJ, or PDF formats.

DMesh is offered as FREEMIUM tool and is currently available on Windows, MacOS and Iphone. The free version gives you the basic yet powerful features on creating your artwork, while DMesh Pro goes beyond the basics with set of features to expertly handle animations.

From the team that brought the cartoonizer tools, Polygen is another simple tool for generating Low Poly artworks. It has both online version (web-based) and offline version (software). This tool automatically applies the polygon effect in the form of filters on your base image unlike other tools mentioned above that gives you the freedom to plot points and adjust the number of triangles generated on the artwork.

The online version gives you a set of 15 filters for the artwork generation. You simply place your base image on the canvass by uploading or entering a URL and then choose one of Polygonize’s default filters. The output on this version is limited to 700 pixels or less giving you a low-quality image. However, if you want higher resolution artworks, there is a low-priced Windows version available, it offers a free trial but gives you watermarks on your output.
